In their work, they often comes across common questions from their patients or those considering treatment. Below, VMA doctors address some of the most frequently asked questions that they receive.

What is a psychiatrist and how is that different from a psychologist or therapist?

Psychologists and psychiatrists both specialize in human behavior and mental conditions.  A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who specializes in psychiatry. A psychiatrist is able to prescribe medications and administer therapy. A psychologist uses talk therapy to help the patient understand the problem, develop coping mechanisms and move forward in a more positive direction.

Would I have a need to see a psychologist if I am already seeing a psychiatrist?

A psychiatrist rarely relies on drugs alone for therapy and treatment. Ventre Medical Associates always recommends a treatment plan combining both a psychiatrist and a psychologist. Both types of professionals contribute to optimal healing and growth.  The combination is an important component of treatment for troubled patients.

Some signs below, taken from ezinearticle.com:

Substance Abuse

Life is filled with trying situations that can worry and stress even the most relaxed person. Sometimes, people get to a point when they cannot take it anymore and want to escape. Often time’s alcohol is a source of relief for many people. It can numb the pain and make people forget their problems for a while. The same thing happens with drugs. Some folks just need to get away from it all and use drugs to stay in a fantasy world. The bad thing is that eventually, you have to come back to reality. Someone that works in the psychiatry arena can help you get back on track. That’s because, to live, you cannot be drunk or highall the time. So to overcome your issues, you will need the expert help of a doctor.

Mental Disorder

Being detached from reality is not a good thing. You may not notice it, but family and friends may realize you don’t seem to act in a rational manner. Also, some people can become violent or a threat to others if they’re having psychotic thoughts. A professional in psychiatry can assess the situation and offer an array of solutions for someone suffering through this. While there’s no quick fix, there is help available for those that want it.

Depression

Feeling sad or blue is nothing to be worried about. It happens to everyone. Yet, if it is consuming your life and you don’t want to get out of bed anymore, it’s time to see a doctor in the psychiatry field. That’s because even though you may not think you’re depressed, a skilled physician can diagnose you to make sure that is or isn’t the case. It’s understandable that life events like a death in the family can make some people spiral down into a dark place. But as time goes by, the person will usually become himself or herself again. If you’re not doing this, then it’s time to get professional help so you can start living again.
